Whitney and Matt were married on a picture perfect summer day at Charleston, SC’s historic Boone Hall Plantation. A classic color palette of blush and gold accented the rustic beauty of the location. The front lawn, with its ancient oak trees and ornate gate played host to the ceremony, and the reception on the Cotton Dock was decked out with greenery and lush blooms by Lindsay Bishop Events, with chandeliers and candles adding a touch of sparkle to the natural surroundings. Ruffled LulaKate bridesmaids dresses in peony pink added a fun pop of color and perfectly accented Whitney’s gown from Bridals by Lori. Head over heels for this beautiful day and the images from Rachel Red Photography!
What is your proposal story?
Whitney went to Charleston for a “girls getaway” weekend with her best friend just for fun. The day she was supposed to come home, Matt called and said he wanted to come down and bring their daughter (Kensington) to spend the day in Charleston. When Matt arrived, the 3 went to the Vendue for drinks on the roof to kill time until dinner. Whitney thought it was a little strange that Matt was drinking beer after beer at 3pm on a Tuesday, but just went with it. He then suggested they take a walk down to the waterfront park to show Kensington the fountains & boats. On the way, Matt took various detours and Whitney was getting so annoyed-it was 100 degrees out and super humid! Little did she know that Matt has setup a photographer to capture the surprise engagement and he was trying to kill time because the photographer was running late! After walking around the park, Matt took Whitney to the pineapple fountain and got down on one knee and proposed! It was such a surprise and we got to share it with our daughter right there with us!
What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?
Most importantly we wanted our guests to have a great time and have a time to remember. It was also important to us to be able to spend some QT taking in our memories and spending a special quiet moments with our daughter. We splurged on alcohol!
What were your favorite parts of the day?
So many favorites to choose from, but by far I think it was seeing our daughter walk down the aisle as our flower girl and the look on Matt’s face as he watched her. My heart was literally leaping out of my chest and bursting with all the love! Funny story: the boys had all gone to get a shave that day before getting ready. I walked out of my little holding area to do our first look and saw all the guys, but not a single one turned to speak to me – super weird! Moving on, we all met up to do bridal party pictures and it turned out they had all decided to shave their facial hair into mustaches – which they knew I wouldn’t have been crazy about! Luckily, my husband didn’t follow suit but it’s a funny story to reflect back on!
Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?
One personal touch I absolutely adored – I had a piece of my grandfathers monogrammed blue shirt sewn into my dress since he passed away and couldn’t be there. I also wore my grandmothers pearl necklace – which I had to wait until my wedding day to actually get possession of as my own!
Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?
Take time to enjoy being with each other being engaged!! There is so much to get done and stress always creeps in, but being engaged is SO fun and it seems to fly by with all the planning and festivities that happen along the way. Take time to slow down and just be engaged!
